With liver diseases, analysis of liver tissue is one of the most accurate examination methods. Liver biopsy is an invasive procedure, and it is only performed if other examination methods have been exhausted.
A tissue sample is taken from the liver using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance. The liver itself does not feel pain, but the liver capsule does, which is why a local anaesthetic injection is performed before the biopsy. Taking the biopsy only lasts for a few seconds. After the biopsy has been taken, the patient is required to lie down for 4 hours. The liver biopsy is performed either in the day treatment unit or on an inpatient basis.
