Taking a biopsy
Histological examination of a tissue sample (biopsy) is often required to identify a gastrointestinal disease.
For this, tissue samples will be taken in the course of endoscopy with small pincers or a needle (through the channel inside the endoscope). This is painless for the patient and serious adverse effects (such as bleeding) are extremely rare. The samples will be sent to the pathology centre, where a result will usually be reached within 2–3 weeks.
