Therapeutic plasma exchange

In rheumatology, therapeutic plasma exchange is used in several systemic connective tissue diseases.

The procedure has a curative effect for many diseases, because together with the plasma, disease-causing protein structures such as cryoglobulins or autoantibodies are eliminated from the bloodstream. Plasma exchange is performed using a modern plasma separator, which removes a certain amount of blood plasma from the patient's circulation.

Therapeutic plasma exchange is performed in the day care department of the Centre of Rheumatology.

The necessity of the procedure is decided by the treating physician.
