Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum.

The source of infection is an infected person and transmission is primarily sexual. The infection starts with a painless ulcer forming at the entry site of the pathogen, an untreated infection will progress. Syphilis diagnosis starts with a screening test. If the screening test result is “Referred for confirmation”, a confirmative test is necessary. After having syphilis, the antibodies remain for years.
