to the Breast Centre!
Women and men of all ages who want to check their breasts or who have any breast-related questions or complaints are welcome to visit our Centre. Be sure to come in for an appointment if you have found knots, lumps, or nodules in the breast, if you have long-term soreness of the breasts, or if you have a family history of breast cancer.
Each year, we see nearly 5,000 patients with breast complaints, and we diagnose nearly 150 new breast cancer cases annually. However, the majority of breast complaints are benign, so it’s always worth consulting us to ensure your peace of mind. In the case of breast-related problems that require urgent intervention (e.g. suspicion of cancer), a mammogram can be performed on the same day as the appointment. A referral is not need for an appointment. However, if you suspect breast cancer, a referral from your family physician or a letter describing the problem will ensure a faster appointment time, when sent to the address rind [at] itk.ee (rind[at]itk[dot]ee).

women born in the years 1950, 1954, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1970, 1972 and 1974 to visit us for a breast cancer screening.
The screening is free of charge (also for uninsured patients). Registration via the Health Portal or by calling 666 1900.

How to check your breasts?
Look at your breasts in the mirror, first with your hands by your side and then with your hands on the back of your head:
are your breasts of normal size and shape
is the skin smooth and even, of normal colour.
do the nipples appear normal and move upwards when you raise your hand
The easiest way to feel your breasts is while bathing, when the skin is covered in soap. A slippery hand makes any unevenness or lumps easy to feel.

start at the nipple, moving outwards with gentle circular movements
in this way, the entire chest and the underarm area are palpated
repeat the same with the right breast, palpating it with the left hand
Be sure to make an appointment if you notice:
painful ‘lumps’, a tightness in the breast or under the armpit
changes in the shape, size or colour of your breasts
secretions from the nipple
nipple or skin retraction
redness of the breast, orange-peel skin, ulceration
enlarged axillary lymph nodes
pain or discomfort in the breast
Breast pain – is it breast cancer?
Not all changes in breast health necessarily mean cancer. If at your appointment, based on your complaints and initial tests, cancer is suspected, we are able to quickly refer you for further testing and appointments with relevant specialists. In our hospital we offer separate appointment and examination times for patients suspected of having cancer, so that a possible diagnosis can be confirmed or refuted quickly. If cancer is suspected, specialists will specify the presence, size and location of the tumour. Most examinations are carried out on an outpatient basis, so there is no need for a long (overnight) stay in hospital. Sometimes surgery is required to collect a tissue sample for an accurate diagnosis. These procedures are usually done on a day-care basis, which means patients can go home after the examination. The time required to receive test results depends on the test. Radiology results are usually available within three (3) days, histology results are usually available within two (2) weeks. For more complex analyses, it can take up to one (1) month to get answers.
