The Surgery Clinic provides high-quality medical care for patients requiring surgical treatment. We are characterised by experienced, well-trained and dedicated staff, a patient- and staff-friendly environment, and excellent diagnostics and treatment facilities that incorporate evidence-based innovative techniques. Thanks to modern technology and advances in intensive care, modern surgery is faster, more effective, safer and less invasive than ever. Increasingly, we also operate on elderly patients and those with serious comorbid diseases.

Centres of Excellence

Our doctors’ day-to-day work requires them to be proficient in both general acute surgical conditions and in more specialised fields. Therefore, one of the key development directions of the Surgery Clinic is the establishment of Centres of Excellence in more specialised and complex surgical fields.

The clinic also offers nurse’s appointments in various specialties. For example, wound care nurses provide professional wound care while also focusing on patient education and at-home guidance.

Treatment of malignant tumours

With increasing cancer incidence, advancements in diagnostics for early detection and expanding treatment options, surgical treatment of malignant tumours has invariably become a crucial part of our services.

To ensure the best combination of treatment methods, all decisions are made by multidisciplinary oncological councils that involve experts in both diagnostics and treatment. Our goal is to find the most suitable approach for each individual patient.

In tumor surgery, it is also important to use organ-preserving techniques (e.g., oncoplastic surgery, sentinel lymph node removal using nuclear medicine methods), minimally invasive approaches (such as laparoscopic surgery), reconstructive procedures, and new technologies, such as microwave ablation (MWA) for the destruction of tumor lesions.

The surgery clinic treats all types of gastrointestinal, skin, soft tissue (muscle, fat, connective tissue), bone, endocrine system (glands) and urological tumours. In collaboration with the Women’s Clinic, we also treat breast and gynaecological cancers.

For patients with a suspected malignant tumour, general practitioners can use an e-consultation to refer them, and we will find an appointment within a week.

Collaboration

The surgery clinic prioritises patient-centred collaboration with general practitioners and regional hospitals across Northern Estonia. For radiation therapy services, we maintain excellent cooperation with the North Estonia Medical Centre Radiotherapy Centre.

As a teaching hospital, we provide training for high school and university students and medical residents from Tallinn’s high schools, the University of Tartu and the Tallinn Health Care College.

Achieving the best treatment outcomes relies on collaboration with all other hospital departments. The hospital has established multidisciplinary teams that focus on disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, as well as education, research and development between clinics. These teams serve as centres of excellence in Northern Estonia. The Surgery Clinic leads teams specialising in (for example):

• Obesity treatment (in collaboration with endocrinology, gastroenterology and rehabilitation)
• Spinal disorders (in collaboration with neurology, rheumatology, pain management and rehabilitation)
• Foot diseases (in collaboration with endocrinology, rheumatology, vascular surgery and rehabilitation)
