Help for relatives of the deceased

Our sincere condolences to you for the loss of a loved one.

The death certificate and the deceased’s personal belongings can be collected upon presentation of an identity document starting from the working day following the death, between 14:00 and 16:00:

  • from the A-wing reception desk at the Ravi Street unit (Ravi tn 18, Room RA0169);
  • from the A-wing reception desk at the Magdaleena unit (Pärnu mnt 104, Room MA0120);
  • from the Järve unit (Tervise 8 / Energia 8, Room JA0130).

You may also request a certificate of cause of death there, which contains information about the cause of death.

Please note that the hospital issues the death certificate only once.

Based on the death certificate, you can begin arranging the funeral (contact a funeral service provider or cemetery administrator), apply for funeral benefits, withdraw funds from the deceased’s bank account for funeral expenses (depending on the bank), and carry out other necessary procedures. The first issuance of the death certificate is free of charge. If you require a duplicate, it can be obtained for a fee from the Tallinn Vital Statistics Department or your local municipality.

The deceased is kept in the mortuary (K-wing, Herne tn 33) free of charge as follows:

  • until 15:30 on the working day following the death, if no autopsy is performed;
  • until 15:30 on the working day following the autopsy.

If the end of the storage period falls on a working day preceding a weekend or public holiday, free storage continues until the next working day after the weekend or holiday. If you wish to keep the deceased in the mortuary longer, this can be arranged with a funeral service provider according to their price list.

The deceased is released from the hospital mortuary upon presentation of the death certificate on working days from 8:00 to 15:30. The deceased may be handed over to a funeral service provider based on a written authorization from a relative.

The hospital does not provide body preparation services. Information about the preparation of the deceased and funeral arrangements can be obtained from your chosen funeral service provider. To apply for funeral benefits, please contact the local municipality where the deceased was last registered. The benefit can be applied for by the person organizing the funeral. The amount of the benefit is determined by the local municipality.

The deceased’s personal belongings and clothing are stored for 30 days, after which they are destroyed or reused.
