ITK Reappointed as an International Spine Surgery Training Centre

19.12.2025

The international professional organisation AOSpine has selected the Spine Surgery Centre of Ida-Tallinn Central Hospital (ITK) as its official international training centre for the next three years. The designation is valid until the end of 2028 and enables spine surgeons from various countries to come to Estonia for advanced training.

“The designation as an international training centre confirms that our clinical practice and teaching capacity meet high international standards and that ITK is a reliable partner in the field of spine surgery,” said Greete Pedai, Head of the Spine Surgery Centre.

This is not the first time ITK has received this recognition. The hospital held the same designation in the periods 2018–2021 and 2021–2024. The renewed decision confirms that the standard of spine surgery in Estonia continues to meet international benchmarks.

AOSpine is a global professional organisation that brings together orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons specialising in spinal disorders and is dedicated to improving quality of care and continuing medical education. Through its fellowship programme, physicians awarded an AOSpine scholarship can undertake clinical training at selected centres.

As an international training centre, Ida-Tallinn Central Hospital hosts visiting physicians for up to two months, during which they participate in both clinical work and spine surgery procedures.

The AOSpine certificate was issued by Juan Emmerich, Chair of the International Board of AOSpine, and Mark Markel, President of the AO Foundation.
