Invasive prostate cancer diagnostics: a combined method of mpMRI and US or fusion guided biopsy

In March 2017, the Centre of Urology at East Tallinn Central Hospital was the first in Estonia to begin using a new method for obtaining tissue samples from the prostate.

The method includes the combining or fusion of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography. The method enables a very precise tissue sample to be collected from a suspicious lesion in the prostate discovered during an MRI, which greatly improves the diagnostic value when looking for prostate cancer.

This method enables the detection of prostate cancer in men in whom no pathology has been found in the prostate, even in the case of several biopsies, but in whom a clinical suspicion of a malignant tumour of the prostate still persists.
