Surgical treatment of spinal curvature disorders
Spinal curvature disorders can be congenital or develop during life. In surgical treatment, metal fixators are used to correct spinal curvature disorders.
Curvature disorders usually occur in either the thoracic or lumbar region. Kyphosis is a curvature of the spine that causes the top of the back to appear more rounded than normal and scoliosis is a disorder where the spine twists and curves to the side. Sometimes curvature disorders can be combined and occur throughout the spine. If the spine becomes too curved, a person can no longer stand or sit straight and their back gets tired quickly. Surgical treatment of spinal curvature disorders is indicated if the curvatures are extensive and the daily quality of life has decreased.
Today, we are the only centre in Estonia where adult spinal curvature disorders can be treated surgically.
