2026 Cervical Cancer Screening: Women Invited for Check-ups
This year, women are invited to participate in free cervical cancer screening, with the option to check their health either on-site at the hospital or via a convenient home testing kit.
The free screening is available to all insured and uninsured women who fall within this year's target group. The goal of the screening is to detect early changes that are successfully treatable with timely intervention. To ensure quick access, specific appointment times with midwives have been allocated for screening participants. In addition to visiting the clinic, participants can opt for a home test, which can be ordered online or requested at a pharmacy.
According to Dr. Külli Erlang, gynaecologist and Head of the Women's Advisory Centre at ITK, cervical cancer is a disease that can be almost entirely prevented through vaccination and screening. "Every year, 120–130 women in Estonia are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and unfortunately, for one-third of them, the disease is already at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. This is a preventable form of cancer – early changes in the cervix are treatable," Dr. Erlang emphasised. She added that besides screening, HPV vaccination is a crucial preventive measure, provided free of charge to boys and girls aged 12–18.
Statistics show that during the previous period, precancerous changes were detected in nearly 1,900 people through screening, preventing the progression of the disease. The screening, as well as any immediate follow-up examinations and treatment, are free of charge for participants.
