“It is a great honour to present our oncology units to the external experts and share our success stories,” said Elen Vettus, Head of the Oncology Centre at East Tallinn Central Hospital. “At the same time, this is an opportunity to receive substantive feedback from specialists with international experience. Their assessment helps us understand where we are already at a European level and where there is room for improvement.”

The day began with a tour of clinics and departments, where the experts observed the hospital’s daily work. Tarmo Bakler, Chairman of the Management Board, gave an overview of the hospital’s operations and the organisation of cancer care. The visit continued with expert presentations and discussions on oncology.

The experts highlighted Estonia’s digital infrastructure and the dedication of local specialists as key strengths. At the same time, the country’s cancer sector needs significant improvements in strategic leadership, the conduct of clinical research, and the coordination of patient-centred care pathways.

“The experts’ recommendations confirm that we are moving in the right direction,” added Kadi-Liis Veiman, Head of Estonia’s cancer control network. “We have begun developing care pathways for cancer patients, established the ESTCAN collaboration network, and are seeking joint solutions to strengthen clinical research capacity. Our next priority is to systematise activities and ensure nationwide coordination.”

The visit took place under the EU Mission on Cancer–funded project CCI4EU (Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures for the EU). Previously, the expert group visited Tartu University Hospital and the North Estonia Medical Centre to obtain a comprehensive picture of the current state of cancer control in Estonia.
