World’s Leading Experts in Lacrimal Surgery and Dry Eye Disease Gather in Tallinn
The International Congress of Dacryology and Dry Eye will take place in Tallinn from June 17–19, bringing nearly 300 ophthalmologists and researchers from 29 countries to Estonia. The scientific programme will open with a live broadcast from the Eye Clinic of East Tallinn Central Hospital (ITK), where internationally recognised surgeons will perform ophthalmic procedures in real time.
Dry eye disease affects an estimated 344 million people worldwide. Symptoms may begin as daily stinging, burning or fluctuating vision, but in more severe cases the condition can affect work ability and quality of life. Dry eye disease becomes more common with age.
In patients with dry eye disease, the surface of the eye does not remain sufficiently lubricated. This may occur because too little tear film is produced or because it evaporates too quickly from the surface of the eye. As a result, the eye may become irritated, painful and sensitive to light, and vision may fluctuate throughout the day.
Lacrimal diseases, ocular surface problems, and the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease will be discussed at the 15th International Congress of Dacryology and Dry Eye, held at Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn from June 17–19. The congress will bring together experts from Estonia, Japan, the United States, Switzerland and other countries.
According to the main organisers of the congress, ITK ophthalmologists Dr Kadi Palumaa and Dr Reili Rebane, hosting the event in Tallinn is significant. “Hosting the congress in Tallinn provides a unique opportunity to bring the world’s leading lacrimal surgery and dry eye experts to Estonia, while also giving Estonian doctors a chance to learn directly from leading specialists in the field,” they said.
The scientific programme begins on June 17 with a live surgical session. Ophthalmic procedures performed by internationally recognised specialists from Estonia and abroad will be broadcast live from the ITK Eye Clinic to the congress venue.
The three-day congress will focus on lacrimal surgery, lacrimal diseases, ocular surface problems, and the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease. The scientific programme has been accredited for European continuing medical education and awarded 16.5 European CME credits.
The congress is organised by the International Society of Dacryology and Dry Eye in cooperation with the Estonian Ophthalmological Society.
