Audiology

Audiology is a medical field which deals with hearing and balance disorders.

Audiological tests include standard hearing tests which assess the hearing function, including tone audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflex assessment, and speech tests. In addition, the diagnostic tests include more specific tests, e.g. electrophysiologic tests (the assessment of brainstem potentials), otoacoustic emissions (hearing screenings for newborns), etc.

Thorough anamnesis has the key role in the definition of the cause of dizziness. In addition to the diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, special diagnostic position tests are carried out. Position manoeuvres are used to solve this disease. In addition, rehabilitation exercises improving the general balance function are carried out which are suitable for inner ear damage on one side or elevated visual sensitivity as well as for the mitigation of balance function disorders due to ageing.
