Follow-up and Screening for Oncology Patients

The oncology nurse:

• provides counselling;
• monitors the patient’s condition during the post-operative period;
• assesses the overall health status, including weight changes, presence of pain, bowel function, and wound healing;
• issues referrals for necessary tests and examinations (e.g. colonoscopy, CT scan, blood tests including tumour markers).

Oncology patients are referred to the nurse by the hospital’s surgeon.
