On May 26 East Tallinn Central Hospital’s newest clinic, the Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a conference at Fotografiska. Over the past 10 years, the rehabilitation centre has grown into a modern clinic that not only treats patients but also conducts scientific research and provides practical training for students.

“The biggest change and development within the last 10 years has been the fact that the rehabilitation centre has grown into an independent Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation,” says Kaupo Ole, who assumed position as Head of the Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation last November.

Professionalism, cooperation and modernity are the key words used to characterise the activities of the clinic. In 2014, the Amputee Rehabilitation Centre was established in partnership with the United States Embassy in Estonia and the United States European Command with help from the government of the Republic of Estonia. As a continuation of the cooperation with Tallinn University of Technology, the clinic opened the position of development engineer to support cooperation between science and health care (rehabilitation). This is a unique clinic in Estonia that employs prosthetists and houses a workshop for the production of prostheses and prosthetic limbs made for civilians and the military alike.

The Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation uses a number of high-tech medical devices: GRAIL (a device for gait analysis and exercise), AlterG (a treadmill based on anti-gravity technology), etc. The clinic will also receive a robot arm with the support of this year’s veteran’s campaign Sinilill.

At the anniversary conference, Dr Heidi Alasepp, former head of the clinic and current Deputy Secretary General on Health at the Ministry of Social Affairs, and Meeli Mumma, Head of the second rehabilitation department, will look back on the establishment of the Clinic of Medical Rehabilitation. Varje-Riin Tuulik, Head of the West Tallinn Central Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, will talk about rehabilitation-related cooperation between central hospitals in Tallinn, and physiatrist-chief physician Dr Eve Sooba will talk about rehabilitation in Estonia and East Tallinn Central Hospital.

In the afternoon session, we will talk about occupational and manual therapy (occupational therapists Ingmar Ignatenko and Kairi Lees), pelvic floor muscle physiotherapy (physiotherapist Triin Jeršov), the GRAIL system for balance and gait analysis and training (physiotherapists Oskar Põldmaa and Anni Arendi), development engineer Marietta Gavriljuk will present her work and Dr Anneli Teder-Braschinsky, Head of the rehabilitation department, will talk about spasticity treatment.
