Strabismus surgery

Strabismus can be treated surgically by correcting the strength of the muscles that move the eyeball. The surgery involves tightening or weakening one or more muscles, which reduces strabismus.

With strabismus surgery, it is possible to:

  • adjust the position of the eyes
  • in some cases, restore eye coordination (for example, eliminate double vision)
  • achieve a cosmetically satisfactory result

The surgery is performed under a microscope, usually under general anaesthesia. If necessary, surgery can be performed on both eyes at the same time.

The surgery cannot improve visual acuity.
