The use of donor sperm cells

Indications for the use of donor sperm include the poor quality of gametes in a man wishing to have a baby. Donor sperm can also be used if there is a risk of transmitting hereditary diseases to the child or if a woman does not have a male partner. Donation is anonymous. Sperm can be donated by mentally and physically healthy men aged up to 40 years. Only general information about the donor, such as hair and eye colour, build, height, education, marital status, skin colour and nationality, is disclosed to the recipient. In Estonia, egg and sperm donation is regulated by the Artificial Insemination and Embryo Protection Act.

The Centre for Infertility Treatment uses donor sperm ordered from Denmark’s sperm banks, the European Sperm Bank and Cryos International Sperm Bank.
